Instant Recall: The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio
3 HOURS AGO
Pato O’Ward relished being a part of Arrow McLaren’s first 1-2 finish in an NTT INDYCAR SERIES race on Sunday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. But he certainly seemed intent on having the lead role in the accomplishment.
Case in point: The way O’Ward raced teammate Christian Lundgaard on Lap 42 of the 90-lap The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid. Lundgaard drifted wide as he exited Turn 2, and O’Ward pounced on the opportunity to swipe the lead, squaring off the corner to set up a scintillating run down the ensuing straightaway.
Turn 4 is the best passing place on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile road course, and O’Ward was determined to utilize it for a race-changing moment. The two papaya-colored cars were side by side as the corner neared, with O’Ward’s car to Lundgaard’s left. What followed on corner exit were at least two bumps, and another came as they charged toward Turn 5.
The two raced each other fairly, but O’Ward certainly applied some muscle, reminiscent of how Josef Newgarden used some on Simon Pagenaud in 2017 at World Wide Technology Raceway. Like Newgarden on that memorable evening, O’Ward went on to win the race as Lundgaard settled for second place.
O’Ward and Lundgaard delivered the first top-two sweep by teammates this season, the first since Chip Ganassi Racing did so last year at Iowa Speedway with Alex Palou and Scott Dixon. The CGR pair pulled it off three times in 2025.
Nolan Siegel gave Arrow McLaren three drivers in the top 10 with his strong weekend that resulted in a 10th-place finish.
There was a lot to like from this race that literally felt like a heated sprint given the lack of cautions and the intensity with which drivers drove. There were several hold-breath moments between competitors, including ECR's Alexander Rossi and Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon making contact that rattled Dixon's front wing. Rookies Dennis Hauger of Dale Coyne Racing and AJ Foyt Racing's Caio Collet had a Turn 4 dustup, with Collet getting pushed off track. Collet went on to finish 11th and close the Rookie of the Year standings down to 16 points with seven races remaining.
Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood earned the final spot on the podium, but Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Rinus VeeKay was deserving as well. And despite not having the best weekend of his career, Alex Palou finished fifth.
Other noteworthy performances: Andretti Global’s Will Power and ECR’s Christian Rasmussen.
The series takes a week off before returning to competition Sunday, July 19 with the Borschetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway.
