The IR-28: A New Era of INDYCAR for 2028
A new era of NTT INDYCAR SERIES machinery is coming in 2028. A car that is lighter, faster and built to break track records. This rocket ship on wheels was redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up to push the limits of performance with higher top speeds, more on-track action and greater driver safety than ever before.
The Design
The IR-28 is a striking evolution of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES race car, featuring a sleeker, more modern design while retaining the unmistakable DNA of an INDYCAR.
Updates include a new rear wing optimized for both style and efficiency, along with a transparent engine cover window that proudly showcases Chevrolet and Honda branding.
For the first time, the car's aerodynamic architecture has been purpose-built to optimize the wake and create more overtaking opportunities. Additional enhancements include reduced outwash and, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a more aerodynamically stable speedway front wing.
The result is even closer on-track competition, with new aerodynamics that allow cars to follow more closely through corners and race tighter throughout the field.
The IR-28 is engineered to eclipse current lap times and is capable of breaking track records, including at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the one-lap and four-lap qualifying records have stood since two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk set them in 1996.
2028 Powerplant

The IR-28 will be powered by 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 internal combustion engines capable of producing up to 760 horsepower. The next-generation engine formula will deliver increased torque, greater power and enhanced overall performance compared to the current generation of NTT INDYCAR SERIES engines.
Paired with the new engine will be an evolved low-voltage hybrid system that provides greater energy storage, expanded deployment options and a package that is approximately 20 pounds lighter than the current NTT INDYCAR SERIES power unit.
Safety Evolution

While the IR-28 features a sleeker, more modern design, it's what you don't see that is even more impressive. Re-engineered from the ground up, it is the safest monocoque in INDYCAR history. From the aeroscreen and roll hoop to the side-impact structures, the new chassis seamlessly integrates the latest safety and engineering advancements into its core architecture. Built to exceed INDYCAR or FIA standards -- whichever is more stringent -- the IR-28 delivers measurable safety improvements over the current car.
Driver Cockpit
The chassis features a wider cockpit to accommodate a broader range of driver heights and body types, while enhanced airflow and an improved cooling system provide greater comfort and performance behind the wheel.
Side-Impact Protection
Built on decades of race data and incident analysis, the new chassis incorporates stronger, more efficient side-impact structures that increase energy absorption during high-impact crashes.
Crash Dynamics
The IR-28 is engineered for improved stability, with a natural tendency to remain grounded during nose-up, sliding and spinning incidents.
