There is no rest for the weary, much less the winner of last weekend’s Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, or most of those who competed in the epic race. The NTT INDYCAR SERIES rolls on.

Four-plus days after Felix Rosenqvist captured the 110th edition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he and rest of the series regulars will be back on track in the Chevrolet Grand Prix of Detroit presented by Lear (12:30 p.m. ET, FOX, FOX One, INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls).

As those who enjoy U.S. open-wheel racing know, the action is about to change dramatically. The IMS oval is all about speed; Detroit’s downtown street race offers a much more unique challenge.

Concrete walls line the 10-turn, 1.645-mile circuit, and the quarters (and corners) are as tight as they come in this series. Rubbing will indeed be racing as potential contact looms for all who venture to attack, and all will.

The corner at the end of the nearly 3,700-foot Jefferson Avenue straightaway invites trouble, but there are other places to beware. Like, nearly everywhere. At least eight cars were collected in cautions in last year’s race, and full-course yellows waved five times.

This will be the fourth race in Detroit (photo, above) since the series moved away from Belle Isle Park. All three winners of the street circuit version of the event – Alex Palou, Scott Dixon and Kyle Kirkwood in respective years – will be seeking a return to the victory podium.

Indianapolis 500 winner Rosenqvist will be back on track along with runner-up David Malukas and the other three drivers who finished the race less than a half-second later -- Scott McLaughlin, Pato O’Ward and Marcus Armstrong -- in a near photo finish for third place.

Rosenqvist was quick to say after the “500” that the championship points he received were insignificant compared to the other spoils of winning. But they help, and now their importance begin to feel real. The 60 points he received vaulted him to seventh in the standings after seven races. Detroit is the first of 11 races to come to decide who clutches the Astor Challenge Cup.

Palou, who finished seventh at Indy, carries a 37-point lead into this weekend. That advantage is nearly the value of the points that can be gained in a single event, which means Palou is still in an enviable position as the post-Indy portion of the schedule heats up. He is seeking a record-tying fourth consecutive season championship and fifth in five years.

The combination of Malukas finishing second and Kirkwood finishing 16th at Indy has altered the order of the standings near the top. Malukas is Palou’s nearest challenger, with Kirkwood third, 49 points out of the lead.

Palou led a race-high 59 laps at Indy and would have finished higher if not for the dueling fuel strategies that mixed up the top 10. At a minimum, he had one of the three best cars before getting boxed in for the final two restarts.

Palou should be considered among the favorites to win any of the remaining series races. He won the 2023 Detroit race from the pole, and last year he was the victor of the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America (this year’s race is Sunday, June 21) and the Grand Prix of Monterey (the series returns Sunday, Sept. 6). As it stands, the road to the title runs through Palou’s No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. However, Palou also knows that anything can happen. His Detroit race last year ended when his car got knocked into the Turn 1 barrier by Malukas, who was penalized for avoidable contact.

Last year’s Detroit race also featured some of the best career finishes of AJ Foyt Racing’s Santino Ferrucci (second place) and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyffin Simpson (fifth place).

This event begins with Friday’s practice at 3 p.m. ET on FS2. Saturday, FS1 has all the action with the weekend’s second practice at 9 a.m. and qualifying for the NTT P1 Award at 1 p.m. There is a Sunday warmup at 9:30 a.m., also on FS1. FOX One and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls also will cover all sessions.

Weary or not, it’s time to get rolling again.
