Verizon IndyCar Series engine manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda continued the learning process of working with the new universal aerodynamic body kits that will debut in 2018 with one day tests at Road America and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, respectively.

Tuesday’s test were the first of the five manufacturer tests that the manufacturers can conduct before the end of the year, although no more than two cars can participate in any test. Private team testing will begin in January, allowing time for teams to receive the universal kits and attach them to their Dallara IR-12 chassis.

Team Chevy’s two-car effort visited Road America with Simon Pagenaud of Team Penske and Spencer Pigot of Ed Carpenter Racing.

Meanwhile, Honda’s two teams -- Chip Ganassi Racing and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports -- conducted testing at Mid-Ohio.

TMS to honor Hinchcliffe with award

Verizon IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe will be honored by Texas Motor Speedway next month during the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame dinner.

The Canadian’s handling of a heart-breaking defeat in the 2016 Firestone 600 earned him the Texas Motor Speedway Sportsmanship Award.

Graham Rahal made a dramatic last-lap pass of Hinchcliffe to win by 0.0080 of a second, the closest finish in Texas Motor Speedway history. Hinchcliffe exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship following the race, handling the loss with class and dignity following a difficult defeat.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be inducted into the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame at the Nov. 19 event. Texas Motor Speedway will also honor Kyle Busch as Racer of the Year and NASCAR’s Mike Helton with the Bruton Smith Legend Award.
