Aquarium of the Pacific

Verizon IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe has never been shy about diving into new experiences. He’ll literally be doing that today at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California.

At 6:45 p.m. ET today, Hinchcliffe – a certified scuba diver – will conduct the first underwater news conference in INDYCAR history while submerged in the Honda Blue Cavern tank at the aquarium. The first-of-its-kind event serves as a preview for this weekend’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, the Verizon IndyCar Series race that runs on city streets adjacent to the aquarium.

The news conference can be viewed live via the Explore.org continuous live stream that it provides of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Honda Blue Cavern. Click on the video link below to watch.

Hinchcliffe, driver of the No. 5 Arrow Electronics SPM Honda, is excited to make the special dive, a hobby he’s had for two decades.

“I went diving when I was 10 on a family vacation, and fell in love with it right away,” the 31-year-old Canadian said. “It took a couple years to get back to it just due to opportunity, but once I had the freedom to do it, I got certified, got a couple advance certifications as well.

“For me, it’s the ultimate escape. It’s the exact opposite of my life at the racetrack. It’s exciting for me to get to be part of something like this.”

Hinchcliffe will wear a microphone and listening device inside his suit so he may hear and answer media questions during the event, a collaboration among Honda, INDYCAR, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and the aquarium. When he was asked if he was interested in doing the event, Hinchcliffe answered in his typically humorous fashion.

“I jumped in with both fins,” he said.
