There's two months until the 2017 season opens on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. So this week's Classic Rewind is the 2012 race from St. Pete.

In two months, the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season will kick off on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. To mark the occasion, we're jumping into the Wayback Machine to bring to the 2012 season-opening race as this week's Classic Rewind.

The race marked the debut of the Dallara IR-12 chassis as well as the return of Chevrolet to Indy car racing and the debut of Lotus engines.

As the race reached it's three-quarter mark, Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon battled for the victory. After a series of pit stops on Lap 72, Castroneves would make a bold pass on Dixon, giving him the position behind then-leader JR Hildebrand. Castroneves would eventually inherit the lead of the race and he led the final 26 laps to earn his first victory since 2010. On the cool-down lap, Castroneves stopped for his trademark fence climb, this time to pay tribute to the late Dan Wheldon.
